Indian Army Strengthens Focus on Space Technology for Next-Generation Warfare

Space technology is becoming an increasingly important part of India’s military modernisation strategy, with the Indian Army exploring ways to make better use of satellite-based systems for future battlefield operations. As modern conflicts become more dependent on digital connectivity, real-time intelligence and advanced surveillance, the ability to operate effectively in the space domain is gaining strategic importance.

To examine these emerging requirements, the Indian Army organised a seminar titled “Emerging Battlefield: Leveraging Space for Land Forces” at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on November 3, 2026. The event brought together experts from the Armed Forces, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), private industry and academic institutions.

The discussions addressed how space-based infrastructure can support ground forces in increasingly complex operational environments. Particular attention was given to Space Domain Awareness, Space Denial and Secure Satellite Communications, which are considered important areas for strengthening military preparedness.

For land forces operating across challenging geographical regions, dependable communication and access to accurate intelligence can make a significant difference to operational effectiveness. Satellite-enabled systems can help military commanders maintain communication with deployed formations, improve battlefield awareness and coordinate activities across different operational areas.

The seminar also examined the importance of protecting India’s access to space-based resources. As military forces become more reliant on satellite networks, the possibility of communication interference, signal disruption and threats to space infrastructure presents additional security challenges. Developing resilient systems and improving awareness of activities in space are therefore becoming important considerations for defence planners.

Another significant area of discussion was the integration of space technology into Multi-Domain Operations. Future military engagements are expected to involve increasingly coordinated activities across land, air, sea, cyber and space. The ability to combine information and capabilities from these domains could help improve response times, operational coordination and decision-making.

The Indian Army also highlighted the importance of indigenous innovation in developing military space capabilities. Building reliable domestic technologies can help reduce dependence on external systems while ensuring that defence requirements are addressed according to India’s strategic and operational priorities. Collaboration between the military, research organisations, universities and private companies will be important in translating technological developments into practical defence applications.

The seminar reflects India’s wider efforts to strengthen its domestic defence technology ecosystem and prepare its Armed Forces for emerging security challenges. The Defence Ministry has also emphasised the importance of indigenous research, technological development and collaboration with the private sector as part of the country’s broader defence modernisation objectives.

With space increasingly influencing military communication, intelligence and operational planning, the Indian Army’s latest initiative highlights the need to treat this domain as an essential component of future land warfare. Continued cooperation between defence institutions and India’s space technology sector could contribute to building more secure, capable and self-reliant military systems.

The focus is now on understanding emerging technological requirements and developing the capabilities needed to ensure that India’s land forces remain prepared for an increasingly interconnected and technology-driven battlefield.
