India Plans Major Upgrade: Su-30MKI Jets to Get Ultra Long-Range Strike Missiles

India is set to significantly enhance its aerial combat strength by equipping its frontline Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft with next-generation long-range air-to-air missiles. The move is part of a broader effort by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to maintain superiority in increasingly contested airspace across the region.

Defence sources indicate that the new missile system, known for its exceptional range and speed, will allow Indian fighter jets to engage targets at distances far beyond traditional visual range combat. This capability is particularly crucial in modern warfare, where early detection and long-distance engagement can determine the outcome of aerial conflicts.

These advanced missiles are designed to target high-value airborne assets such as airborne warning and control systems (AWACS), mid-air refuelling tankers, and electronic intelligence platforms. By neutralizing such critical systems, the IAF can disrupt enemy coordination and reduce their operational effectiveness in the early stages of conflict.

The decision comes amid growing concerns over the rapid modernization of air forces in the region. One of the major advantages of this upgrade is its cost efficiency.
