India Plans 40 Permanent Intelligence Bureau Offices Along Bangladesh Border in West Bengal to Boost Security

India is set to significantly expand its intelligence infrastructure along the Bangladesh border, with the Union Home Ministry planning to establish around 40 permanent offices of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) across West Bengal’s border districts. The move is aimed at enhancing intelligence collection, surveillance capabilities and internal security preparedness in the strategically important eastern region.

The proposed infrastructure development includes permanent office facilities and residential accommodation for SIB personnel at multiple locations near the India-Bangladesh border. According to reports, land requirements have been assessed for these facilities, with each location expected to need dedicated space for operational and administrative purposes.

The expansion comes amid increased focus on strengthening security along India’s eastern frontier, where agencies continue to monitor challenges such as illegal infiltration, cross-border crime, smuggling networks and other security-related activities. The India-Bangladesh border remains one of the country’s most sensitive international boundaries, requiring continuous intelligence coordination and surveillance.

The Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau offices will allow intelligence personnel to maintain a stronger ground presence and improve coordination with other security agencies operating in border areas. The initiative is expected to provide faster access to local intelligence inputs and improve response mechanisms against emerging threats.

West Bengal shares a significant portion of India’s border with Bangladesh, making the state a key focus area for national security agencies. Along with intelligence infrastructure, authorities have also been working on strengthening border management through enhanced surveillance systems and security infrastructure.

The development reflects the government’s broader strategy of improving border security through a combination of technology, intelligence networks and permanent operational facilities. A stronger SIB presence is expected to play an important role in supporting preventive security measures and maintaining vigilance along the eastern border.
