India Delivers Additional Akash Missile Systems to Armenia, Expanding Defence Export Footprint

India has reportedly completed another shipment of its indigenous Akash Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system to Armenia, marking another important step in the country’s growing defence export programme. The latest delivery is part of an existing defence agreement between the two nations and reflects New Delhi’s increasing role in supplying advanced military equipment to friendly countries.

Armenia was the first overseas customer to acquire the Akash missile system, making the deal a landmark achievement for India’s defence industry. The recent shipment is expected to further enhance Armenia’s layered air defence capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges.

The Akash missile system was designed to defend against a wide range of aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles and other airborne targets. Equipped with advanced radar, command-and-control systems and mobile launchers, the weapon platform provides rapid response and all-weather operational capability for protecting critical military and strategic assets.

The successful export highlights the growing confidence of international buyers in India’s domestically developed defence technologies. Over the past few years, Indian-made military systems have gained increasing attention in global markets due to their balance of operational performance, reliability and competitive pricing.

The Akash programme also demonstrates the progress of India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by Indian defence companies, the system has already been inducted into the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force before securing export orders.

India and Armenia have steadily expanded defence cooperation through equipment procurement, military exchanges and strategic engagement. Defence experts believe that continued deliveries under the Akash contract could pave the way for additional collaborations in missile systems, surveillance equipment and other defence technologies.

As India continues to increase its defence exports, successful programmes such as Akash are expected to strengthen the country’s reputation as a dependable supplier of modern military equipment. With several indigenous platforms attracting interest from overseas customers, New Delhi is gradually establishing itself as an emerging player in the global defence export market.
