Together with two DRDO labs, the Research and Development Establishment (R&DE) in Pune and the Defence Bio-engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL) in Bengaluru, the Hyderabad-based company Svaya Robotics has made India’s first four-legged robot and wearable exo-skeleton.

The company said that it made the four-legged robot and the wearable exoskeleton as technology demonstrators. R&DE and DEBEL helped with the design of each one. Both robots can be used in both industry and healthcare, Svaya Robotics said in a press release Monday about the visit of G. Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Adviser to Union Defence Minister and former chairman of DRDO, and senior scientists from the two DRDO labs to its facility here.

In order to show how important “Make in India” is, the company said that India was now getting these kinds of robots from the U.S. and Switzerland. Svaya said that they were made for structured environments and had limited capabilities. They were not made to be used in terrains and operational conditions that are hard to move around in, like those faced by Indian defence and security forces.

Mr. Reddy was happy with how far Svaya had come and said, “Development partnerships like these are necessary to speed up the development of advanced robotics in India, get them into field trials quickly, and keep developing them so they can be used for both defence and industry.” He said that robotics would be a very important part of the Indian defence, helping to both add more soldiers and give unmatched remote reconnaissance capabilities.

Svaya said that the four-legged robot was made in India with help from the DRDO. Vijay R. Seelam, the company’s founder and managing director, said that it is designed to move through unstructured terrains where it would be dangerous for humans to operate. This is so that defence and security forces can do reconnaissance and inspection from a distance.

The exo-skeleton is being made by Svaya to fit the body shape of an Indian soldier and give them more strength so they can walk long distances without getting tired and lift heavy things without much effort, he said.
