Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has ordered 88 Honeywell TPE331-12B turboprops to power the HTT-40 basic trainer built in India.
According to HAL, the deal is worth more than “$100 million” and will include the provision of engines/kits, as well as maintenance and other support services.
“HAL has successfully developed the Basic Trainer Aircraft (HTT-40) to address the IAF’s basic training requirements,” HAL chairman R Madhavan says.
He adds that the Indian air force has a “potential requirement” for 70 HTT-40s, which is at a “advanced stage of approval.”
HAL also states that it is collaborating with Honeywell to investigate the possibility of exporting the HTT-40.
New Delhi issued a request for proposal for 70 HTT-40s at the Aero India show in February 2021, with options for an additional 38 aircraft.
HAL created the HTT-40 with its own money, investing approximately R5.5 billion ($68.9 million).
