Thursday, the Defense Ministry accepted plans to spend about 7,800 crore on capital purchases. One of these plans was to buy an electronic warfare suite for Mi-17 V5 helicopters.

The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), which is led by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, gave its approval to the plans.

The Defense Ministry said that the DAC cleared two plans: one to buy 7.62×51 mm Light Machine Guns (LMG) and another to buy weapons for the Indian Navy’s MH-60R helicopters.

“A meeting of the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh gave Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) to proposals for capital acquisitions worth about 7,800 crore,” the ministry said in a statement.

It said, “To make the Indian Air Force more effective, the DAC has given AoN for the purchase and installation of Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite on Mi-17 V5 helicopters under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.”

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will be the company that sells the EW suite.

“The DAC has also given AoN for the purchase of a ground-based autonomous system for mechanized infantry and armored regiments,” the ministry said in a statement. “This will allow various operations on the battlefield, such as unmanned surveillance, logistic delivery of ammunition, fuel, and spares, and evacuation of casualties.”

It said that the DAC had also given the go-ahead for plans to buy 7.62×51 mm LMG and Bridge Laying Tank (BLT).

“The introduction of LMG will make infantry forces better at fighting, while the introduction of BLT will help mechanized forces move faster,” it said.

“The Indian Army has also been given the go-ahead to buy ruggedized laptops and tablets through Project Shakti. All of these purchases will only come from sellers in the country, the ministry said.
