On Tuesday, the state-of-the-art Hangar and Dispersal at Naval Air Station INS Utkrosh in Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC) was opened by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan. The ANC command said that the station can hold multiple planes, which will help the Indian Armed Forces expand their strategic reach.

Addressing the occasion, the CDS said the newly introduced hangar facility will provide support for important air operations in strategically significant Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He also said that it would help make the Indian Oceans Region a safer place. “ANC is one of the best examples of integration and cooperation,” the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) said, praising the efforts of people from all three services to work together to keep the islands safe and secure. Gen. Chauhan is on a two-day trip to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands right now.

Gen. Chauhan also opened the Wet Basin and Refit Jetty at the Naval Ship Repair Yard in Port Blair earlier on Monday. The wharf has slung storage rooms for materials and rooms for staff. It is made with help from IIT Chennai and costs more than 360 crore rupees. When he talked about it, the CDS said that the jetty will improve India’s first Joint Theater Command’s strategic reach and sea activities in the area.

About Hangar and Dispersal at INS Utkrosh:

  • The two hangars were 6,000 square meters in size.
  • It can fit P8I airplanes along with Dronier and Advanced Light Helicopters.
  • It should make the Indian Armed Forces’ strategic reach stronger.

INS Utkrosh and its significance

The INS Utkrosh is an Indian navy air station that is part of the Indian Armed Forces’ joint-services Andaman and Nicobar Command. It is near the INS Jarawa military base in Port Blair. It also shares airport services with the civilian airport Veer Savarkar International Airport.

The buildings at INS Utkrosh have changed a lot for the better. The length of the runway has nearly tripled, to 3,400 meters. The INS Utkrosh is in charge of all other air travel over Port Blair, except for the civilian terminal, which is run by the Airports Authority of India. This runway is hard for planes to use because of its geography. A hill at one end makes it impossible for planes to land or take off in any other direction.
