Azad Engineering Delivers First Indigenous Turbojet Engine to DRDO

Azad Engineering has delivered its first fully indigenous expendable turbojet engine to DRDO, marking a significant step forward in India’s domestic propulsion capability for missiles and unmanned systems.

The engine, developed entirely within India, addresses a critical gap in the country’s aerospace and defence manufacturing ecosystem. Turbojet engines power a range of expendable platforms, including cruise missiles, loitering munitions, and high-speed target drones that form the backbone of modern air defence training and operational systems.

India has historically relied on imports or technology transfer agreements for jet engine development. The successful delivery by Azad Engineering, a private sector aerospace component manufacturer, demonstrates the growing maturity of India’s defence industrial base and its capacity to indigenise complex propulsion systems. This aligns with the Government’s Make in India initiative and DRDO’s push to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers for critical defence technologies.

Expendable turbojet engines differ from fighter aircraft turbojets in their design philosophy. They are optimised for single-use applications, allowing for simplified manufacturing, lower unit costs, and rapid production scaling. This makes them ideal for systems like the Brahmos cruise missile family, Nirbhay long-range cruise missile, and the Lakshya target drone series that have been tested and operationalised by the Indian armed forces over the past two decades.

DRDO’s extensive experience with integrated missile development programmes, particularly through the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme and subsequent systems, has established well-defined performance benchmarks for indigenous propulsion. These standards ensure that privately manufactured engines meet the stringent reliability and performance criteria demanded by operational missile and drone platforms.

The delivery by Azad Engineering signals growing collaboration between DRDO’s research establishments and private manufacturers in the aerospace sector. Several private defence companies, including those in the Confederation of Indian Industry’s defence committee, have expanded into propulsion and engine component manufacturing in recent years, supported by government procurement policy reforms and the Defence Ministry’s emphasis on reducing single-vendor dependencies.

Successful indigenous turbojet engines reduce lead times for missile and drone production, enhance supply chain resilience, and create export opportunities for India’s defence industry. Countries across Asia and the Middle East have expressed interest in Indian missile systems, and local engine production strengthens India’s ability to meet international orders without navigating complex export control regimes tied to foreign suppliers.
