Assam Rifles soldiers and unknown men shot at each other early Thursday morning at North Boljang in the Imphal West district of Manipur. Armed troops have been sent to the troubled state of Manipur to bring the situation under control and stop the rioters. This is where the exchange of fire took place.

On Wednesday, there were several reports of violence, including a bomb going off in a parked car at Kwakta in the Bishnupur area. Officials say that witnesses told security workers that the explosion happened right after the driver got out of the car at 7:15 p.m. Three civilians were hurt in the event and were taken to a hospital in Bishnupur.

In the meantime, Union home minister Amit Shah has called for an all-party meeting on June 24 in the national capital to talk about what’s going on in the northeastern state.

A spokesperson for the home ministry wrote, “Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah has called for an all-party meeting on June 24 at 3 p.m. in New Delhi to talk about the situation in Manipur.”

Sonia Gandhi, head of the Congress Parliamentary Party, called for peace in Manipur on Wednesday and said that the violence, which has never happened before, has left a deep wound on the nation’s psyche. In a video message sent out by the Congress, Gandhi sent her respects to everyone who had lost a loved one and said it made her sad that people had to leave the only place they had ever called home and give up everything they had worked for their whole lives.

“In Manipur, a terrible human disaster has been going on for almost 50 days. She said in her message, “The unprecedented violence that has destroyed people’s lives in your state and forced thousands to leave their homes has left a deep wound in the conscience of our nation.”

“It breaks my heart to see our brothers and sisters who used to get along with each other turn against each other,” she said.
