In a big win for women officers, 108 of them will be promoted to Colonel in the Indian Army, and the process will start on Monday (January 9). This is the first time that Indian Army branches like Engineers, Military Intelligence, Army Air Defense, Ordnance, and Service will choose women officers to lead them.

A woman officer was just sent to the Siachen Glacier, and more women are getting the same chances as men in almost all arms and services.

“Women serve in the Indian Army with pride and confidence in different operational theatres. Officers who are women are getting the same chances as officers who are men. “The process for putting women in charge of tenant commands at the Colonel rank is under way,” said officials.

The Army has already taken other steps to give women officers more power. For example, all women officers with short-term commissions are being considered for permanent commission along with their male counterparts.

National Defense Academy has set aside up to 20 spots a year for women to become cadets. Also, there are 80 openings for SSC women officers in the training schools for officers. From 2022 on, women have been able to join the Army Aviation Corps’ Flying Branch as officers directly.

After going through tough training, the officer was sent to the Kumar post in Siachen, which is about 15,600 feet above sea level, for three months. There were endurance drills, ice wall climbing, avalanche and crevasse rescue drills, and survival drills as part of the training.
