Centre Approves Two-Year Service Extension for Agniveers Under Revised Agnipath Scheme

The Government of India has announced a major change to the Agnipath recruitment scheme by approving an additional two-year engagement period for Agniveers who were previously expected to leave the Armed Forces after completing their initial four-year service. The decision was approved by the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on November 4, 2026.

The decision comes just ahead of the completion of the initial four-year tenure of the first batch of Agniveers, with over 18,300 personnel expected to exit the Armed Forces by December 31, 2026. The three services were scheduled to begin releasing these personnel in phases from mid-November. The latest approval provides an additional opportunity for these young personnel to continue their military careers instead of leaving after their initial engagement period.

Announcing the decision, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani explained that the existing provision of selecting 25% of Agniveers for regular employment based on merit would remain unchanged. However, the remaining 75% will now be offered another engagement period of two years, subject to their willingness to continue serving.

After completing the additional two-year engagement period, Agniveers will be offered an opportunity to join the regular Armed Forces as soldiers, provided they are willing and meet the prescribed selection criteria. This revised arrangement creates another pathway for personnel who wish to build a longer career in the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.

The revised arrangement will also provide improved financial benefits to Agniveers accepting the extended service opportunity. According to the Ministry of Defence, the additional engagement period will include higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority-related benefits. These measures aim to recognise the experience, skills and contributions of Agniveers during their military service.

The decision follows a detailed assessment of the Agnipath scheme and feedback received from the three services over the past four years. The evaluation highlighted the strong performance of Agniveers in areas such as physical fitness, discipline, motivation, technical adaptability and professional skills. Their contribution to the operational requirements of the Armed Forces was an important consideration behind the revised arrangement.

Introduced on June 14, 2022, the Agnipath scheme was designed to recruit young personnel into the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force for an initial four-year engagement. Under the original framework, up to 25% of each batch could be retained in regular service based on merit and organisational requirements, while the remaining personnel were expected to complete their tenure and leave with a Seva Nidhi package.

With the latest Cabinet approval, the government has introduced an additional engagement opportunity for the 75% who were previously expected to leave after four years. The move is intended to retain trained and experienced personnel while giving Agniveers another chance to pursue permanent careers in the military.

The government has also decided to continue the Agnipath scheme, with the revised provisions creating a broader pathway towards regular enrolment in the Defence Forces. The development marks an important change in India’s military recruitment framework and reflects the government’s efforts to balance the career aspirations of Agniveers with the operational requirements of the Armed Forces.
