DRDO Expands Indigenous AI and Counter-Drone Capabilities for Border Security

India is moving towards a more technology-driven approach to border surveillance as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) advances a range of indigenous systems based on artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, radar and counter-drone technologies.

The initiative is focused on creating a connected security architecture capable of detecting potential threats, analysing information and supporting an appropriate response. DRDO is working across multiple technology areas so that surveillance and response capabilities can operate together rather than functioning as isolated systems.

The organisation is developing several types of surveillance technologies for monitoring India’s varied border environments. These include fibre-optic-based intrusion detection systems, high-resolution cameras, infrared tracking equipment and advanced multispectral and hyperspectral sensors. Radar-based surveillance, radar imaging and synthetic aperture radar technologies are also being pursued to improve the ability to monitor activities across difficult terrain.

Artificial intelligence is expected to become an important component of this technology ecosystem. DRDO is developing AI engines and algorithms that can process information from different sensors and assist in identifying potential threats. Work is also being undertaken to improve Identification Friend or Foe capabilities, allowing surveillance systems to better distinguish between friendly and potentially hostile objects.

Secure communication is another key requirement of the proposed architecture. Surveillance systems generate large volumes of information that must be transmitted rapidly and reliably to the relevant command and response elements. DRDO is therefore also working on communication technologies intended to support the wider network of border monitoring and defence systems.

Counter-drone capabilities have emerged as a particularly important area of development. DRDO has already developed indigenous counter-drone technology, with earlier systems transferred to industry for production and deployed at critical locations. The systems combine technologies such as radar and electro-optical sensors to detect, track and identify unmanned aerial threats.

The organisation is pursuing both electronic and physical methods for dealing with hostile drones. Electronic countermeasures can interfere with the operation of an unmanned aircraft, while directed-energy technologies such as laser systems offer another option for neutralising aerial threats. DRDO is continuing to develop higher-end directed-energy and counter-drone solutions as unmanned systems become an increasingly important component of modern warfare.

The wider programme also highlights the importance of developing critical technologies within India. Sensors, cameras, radar-related components, processing algorithms and communication systems are among the areas where greater domestic capability can strengthen the country’s defence technology base.

Indigenous development could provide India with greater control over the design, modification and future upgrading of strategically important systems. It can also help reduce dependence on overseas suppliers for critical technologies and components required for surveillance and defence applications.

The growing integration of AI with sensors and radar reflects the changing requirements of border security. Modern threats can emerge through multiple domains, including unmanned aerial systems and other low-observable or difficult-to-detect platforms. A network combining different sensors with automated data processing can provide a more comprehensive picture of activity in monitored areas.

DRDO’s work is therefore centred not only on individual surveillance or counter-drone products but also on building an integrated technology ecosystem. By combining artificial intelligence, advanced sensing, radar, communications and directed-energy capabilities, India is seeking to strengthen its ability to detect emerging threats and respond more effectively.

The development of these indigenous technologies forms part of India’s broader drive towards self-reliance in defence. Continued progress in AI-enabled surveillance and counter-drone systems could strengthen domestic defence capabilities while creating opportunities for Indian industry to participate in the production and deployment of advanced security technologies.
