The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) have taken another significant step towards the Chandrayaan-5 mission following a meeting in Bengaluru. The discussions focused on reviewing the mission’s progress, strengthening coordination between both agencies and advancing preparations for the joint India-Japan Moon exploration programme.
Chandrayaan-5, also known as the Lunar Polar Exploration Mission (LUPEX), is a collaborative mission between India and Japan designed to explore the Moon’s south polar region. The mission aims to study the lunar surface, analyse available resources and collect scientific data that could support future exploration activities.
As part of the partnership, ISRO will develop the lander system, while JAXA will contribute the rover technology for exploring the challenging conditions of the Moon’s polar terrain. The rover is expected to carry advanced scientific instruments to examine surface materials and gather important information about the lunar environment.
The Bengaluru meeting highlighted the growing cooperation between the two space agencies and provided a platform to discuss mission planning, development activities and coordination between Indian and Japanese teams. The collaboration reflects the increasing role of international partnerships in advancing space exploration capabilities.
