Russia Eyes Revival of Ka-226T Helicopter Project with India During Putin’s Visit
Moscow proposes new engines and deeper technology transfer to fast-track joint production deal.

Russia is preparing a fresh proposal to put the long-stalled Ka-226T light utility helicopter program back on track, with President Vladimir Putin expected to discuss the project during his planned visit to India later this year.
Diplomatic and defence sources indicate that Moscow has reworked its offer to better align with India’s requirements under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. The revised package includes a modern engine option, improved avionics, and a stronger commitment to technology transfer, aimed at increasing the indigenous share in production.
The Ka-226T was initially selected in 2015 for joint manufacturing in India through a partnership between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russian Helicopters. The plan involved building more than 200 units to replace the Army and Air Force’s ageing Cheetah and Chetak fleets. However, the agreement stalled due to cost escalations, concerns over local content, and evolving operational priorities.
With India facing urgent needs for modern helicopters capable of high-altitude operations, Russia’s renewed pitch is seen as an attempt to secure its role in India’s defence modernization. The Ka-226T, known for its coaxial rotor system and agility in mountainous terrain, is positioned as a suitable replacement for the ageing platforms currently used in Ladakh and Siachen.
Analysts believe that if the proposal gains traction during President Putin’s visit, it could mark a breakthrough in India-Russia defence cooperation, while also reinforcing New Delhi’s goal of enhancing domestic aerospace manufacturing capabilities.
