- The fire was quickly put out. Popko said on the Telegram app that there were no reports of accidents right away.
- Officials in Ukraine say that a Russian attack in the city of Kostiantynivka in the east killed 17 people on Wednesday.
Russia attacked Kyiv from the air early on Sunday. Explosions could be heard for almost two hours in and around the Ukrainian capital, and pieces of a drone fell on several of the city’s central neighborhoods.
Ukraine’s Land Forces said that the country’s air defense systems shot down 25 of 32 Shahed drones made in Iran and fired by Russia. Most of the drones were headed for Kyiv and the area around Kyiv.
At least five explosions were heard by people in Kyiv who spoke to Reuters, and Ukrainian news video showed that a number of cars were damaged.
Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s city military administration, said on the Telegram message app, “Drones came into the capital in groups and from different directions.”
Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said that one person was hurt in the ancient neighborhood of Podil and that a fire started near one of the city’s parks.
Klitschko and the city’s military administration said that parts of drones that crashed fell on the Darnytskyi, Solomianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Podil districts.
Drone parts started a fire in an apartment in the Shevchenkivskyi neighborhood. The fire was quickly put out. Popko said on the Telegram app that there were no reports of accidents right away.
Russia didn’t say anything right away about the strikes. Moscow has been attacking Ukraine’s land almost every night. Officials in Ukraine say that a Russian attack in the city of Kostiantynivka in the east killed 17 people on Wednesday.
