Trump Administration Imposes 10% Tariff on Indian Goods Over Labour Concerns

The Trump administration has imposed a fresh 10 per cent tariff on Indian exports, citing forced labour concerns, according to reports. The measure places India among 60 countries facing new duties under what the US administration describes as a “correcting human rights abuse” framework.

India faces a 10 per cent tariff rate, while 59 other nations are subject to a 12.5 per cent levy. The action signals renewed scrutiny of labour practices across major trading partners under the new US administration’s trade policy.

The tariff move comes at a time when India and the United States maintain robust defence and strategic partnerships. The two nations have expanded military-to-military cooperation significantly in recent years, including joint exercises, defence technology sharing, and alignment on Indo-Pacific security strategies.

India’s defence industrial base, including state-owned enterprises and private manufacturers, has benefited from increased US engagement in sectors ranging from aerospace to advanced materials. American defence firms have also expanded presence in India’s defence procurement ecosystem following relaxed foreign direct investment norms in the defence sector.

The broader US-India strategic relationship encompasses intelligence sharing, military logistics cooperation, and joint naval operations in the Indian Ocean. Both nations have coordinated positions on regional security challenges and maintain dialogue through the US-India 2+2 ministerial mechanism, which brings together defence and foreign ministry leaders.

Trade tensions with the US could potentially impact India’s defence sector if tariffs extend to sensitive defence components or raw materials used in weapons production. However, defence trade typically operates under separate bilateral agreements and strategic frameworks that may insulate military cooperation from broader tariff disputes.
