PM Modi Calls for Stronger Integration of Armed Forces at Commanders’ Meet

Focus on joint operations, theatre commands, and advanced technologies to strengthen India’s defence posture

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the Defence Ministry and military leadership to speed up reforms aimed at greater integration and operational synergy between the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Addressing the Combined Commanders’ Conference (CCC) in Kolkata, the Prime Minister underlined that India’s security challenges demand a unified approach backed by innovation and technology.

Modi stressed that future wars will be shaped by artificial intelligence, unmanned platforms, and multi-domain operations, making it critical for the services to function seamlessly rather than in silos. He highlighted that restructuring command structures into integrated theatre commands would not only enhance combat effectiveness but also optimise resources, logistics, and training.

The Prime Minister also reiterated his government’s stance on terrorism, warning that any attempt at cross-border aggression would be met with swift and decisive response. He asked the armed forces to stay adaptive, forward-looking, and self-reliant, aligning with the broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence.

Currently, India has 17 separate service commands. The proposed reform aims to consolidate these into two major theatre commands-one focused on the western border with Pakistan and another on the northern frontier with China. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, along with the three service chiefs, are participating in the conference to chart a concrete roadmap for the transition.

Analysts say this shift could be the most significant structural change in India’s defence architecture since Independence, aligning the forces with modern strategic realities.
