Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has commenced a four-day official visit to Mauritius from August 10 to 13, 2026, as India seeks to further expand its longstanding maritime partnership with the Indian Ocean island nation. The visit is part of India’s continued engagement with Mauritius to strengthen bilateral maritime cooperation and deepen defence relations.
During the visit, Admiral Swaminathan is scheduled to meet senior members of the Mauritian government and discuss matters of mutual interest. The talks are expected to cover maritime security, defence cooperation, military collaboration and capacity building, with the broader objective of improving coordination between the two countries in the maritime domain.
Mauritius occupies an important position in the Indian Ocean Region, making maritime cooperation with the country an important element of India’s regional security outreach. India and Mauritius have developed close working relationships in areas including maritime surveillance, training, operational interactions and hydrographic cooperation. Cooperation in monitoring the Exclusive Economic Zone has also formed part of the countries’ maritime engagement.
The Indian Navy and Mauritius have maintained regular interaction through naval deployments, training activities and regional maritime initiatives. These engagements have helped strengthen professional exchanges and coordination while supporting efforts to address common maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean.
India’s wider maritime engagement with Mauritius also connects with regional initiatives involving the Indian Navy. Platforms such as the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, MILAN, the International Fleet Review, Goa Maritime Conclave, IOS SAGAR and Exercise AIKEYME have provided avenues for greater interaction and cooperation among maritime forces.
The current visit comes at a time when India is placing increasing emphasis on partnerships with Indian Ocean countries to improve maritime security and regional stability. Mauritius is regarded as an important partner in these efforts, and stronger defence cooperation can contribute to enhanced maritime awareness and coordinated responses across the region.
Admiral Swaminathan’s visit also reflects India’s broader MAHASAGAR vision, which places emphasis on mutual growth, security and cooperation among countries across the Indian Ocean and neighbouring regions.
