The US has said that selling Army-equipped General Atomics MQ-9B drones to India would improve their maritime security and domain knowledge.

The State Department told the State Department last week that it had decided to allow the sale of 31 armed MQ-9B drones for an estimated USD 3.99 billion.

During his historic state visit here in June 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about the planned huge drone deal.

At his daily news conference, State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters, “We believe this sale will give India better maritime security and maritime domain awareness.”

“It gives India full ownership of these planes,” Mr. Patel said. “This is something we’ll continue to work with our Indian partners to improve.”
