Israel Reaffirms Defence Cooperation Expansion With India

Israel has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding defence cooperation with India through new bilateral initiatives, according to recent statements from Israeli officials tracking deepening military-to-military ties between the two nations.

The development underscores the accelerating pace of defence partnerships between New Delhi and Tel Aviv, which have grown substantially over the past decade across intelligence sharing, joint exercises, and procurement of advanced systems.

Israel is one of India’s largest defence suppliers. The relationship encompasses sophisticated air defence systems like the Barak 8 (jointly developed with India’s DRDO for naval air defence), drone technology, surveillance platforms, and electronic warfare capabilities. Israeli firms have also partnered with Indian defence manufacturers on technology transfer and co-production initiatives aligned with the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat policy objectives.

The bilateral defence engagement extends beyond hardware to training and operational cooperation. Indian Air Force and Navy personnel regularly participate in joint exercises with Israeli counterparts. Naval exercises in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean have included Israeli warships, reflecting the strategic convergence in maritime security concerns across the region.

Intelligence sharing between the two nations has intensified, particularly regarding counterterrorism operations and regional security threats. Israel’s experience in managing asymmetric threats and operating advanced sensor-to-shooter systems holds direct relevance for Indian security planners managing similar challenges across diverse terrain.

The Israeli defence industrial base benefits from the Indian market, which has committed substantial capital to modernisation. Indian procurement orders have encouraged Israeli companies to establish regional manufacturing hubs and service centers, creating jobs and technology spillovers within India’s defence ecosystem.

DRDO collaborations with Israeli research institutions have focused on unmanned systems, loitering munitions, and advanced materials. The Harop anti-radiation loitering munition, for instance, has generated interest from Indian armed forces evaluating indigenous alternatives for suppressing air defence radars.

Geopolitical factors have reinforced the partnership. Both nations face regional security challenges and share concerns about terrorism, Iranian strategic expansion, and ensuring freedom of navigation in critical sea lanes. The Abraham Accords framework, while primarily focused on Israeli-Arab normalization, has indirectly strengthened India-Israel strategic alignment.

The expanded cooperation signals Israeli intent to deepen its technological footprint in Indian defence production while New Delhi seeks proven systems and expertise to accelerate its own modernisation timeline across all three services.
