The Indian Navy’s guided-missile destroyer INS Mysore has arrived at Lumut, Malaysia, to participate in the fourth edition of the bilateral maritime exercise Samudra Laksamana with the Royal Malaysian Navy. The warship reached Malaysia on 9 September 2026, marking another important engagement between the two countries’ naval forces.
The exercise is aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation, improving interoperability and promoting professional exchanges between the Indian Navy and Royal Malaysian Navy. The engagement provides personnel from both sides with an opportunity to interact closely, exchange operational experience and gain a better understanding of each other’s procedures.
As part of the exercise, naval personnel will participate in cross-deck visits, operational interactions and sporting engagements. These activities are designed to strengthen professional relationships and improve coordination between the participating forces. The exercise will include interactions both in harbour and at sea, providing practical opportunities for personnel from the two navies to work together.
The latest edition of Samudra Laksamana comes amid continued expansion of defence cooperation between India and Malaysia. The two countries maintain regular military engagements, and naval exercises remain an important avenue for strengthening bilateral maritime ties.
The deployment of INS Mysore also reflects the Indian Navy’s wider maritime engagement with partner countries in the Indo-Pacific. India has been placing greater emphasis on maritime cooperation with Southeast Asian nations, with Malaysia being an important partner in the region.
The Ministry of Defence has stated that the current engagement is aligned with India’s MAHASAGAR vision and the ASEAN-India Year of Maritime Cooperation 2026. The exercise further supports the shared objective of strengthening professional and operational links between the two maritime forces.
The arrival of INS Mysore at Lumut therefore marks another step in the development of India-Malaysia maritime cooperation, while providing both navies with an opportunity to enhance mutual understanding and interoperability through direct professional and operational engagement.
