On Tuesday, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), based in Kolkata, launched at the Larsen and Toubro, Kattupalli Port an anti-submarine warfare shallow watercraft vessel for the Navy.

Anjadip is the third of the eight ships that are part of the contract made in April 2019 between Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata and the Ministry of Defence.

An official release said that the ship was named after the island of Anjadip, which is near Karwar Port in Karnataka, to show the island’s strategic value in the sea.

The “Arnala” class of ships built by GRSE would replace the current “Abhay” class of Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes in the Navy. These ships are made to do anti-submarine operations in coastal waterways, low-intensity maritime operations, and subsurface surveillance, among other things.

The ships would be made in their own country 80% of the time. Each ship would be about 77 meters long, weigh 900 tons, have a top speed of 25 knots, and be able to go for 1,800 nautical miles without stopping.
