Indian Army Launches Mega Procurement Drive for 2,715 Logistic Drones to Transform Border Supply Network
The Indian Army has taken a major step towards modernising its battlefield logistics by initiating the procurement of 2,715 logistic drones, a move that is expected to become the largest acquisition of its kind for the force. The proposed induction is aimed at strengthening last-mile supply operations for troops deployed across India’s challenging border regions, including sectors along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Line of Control (LoC).
The Ministry of Defence has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify suitable platforms capable of transporting essential military supplies such as ammunition, rations, medicines, communication equipment, and engineering stores to remote forward posts. The initiative is intended to reduce reliance on conventional supply methods that are often affected by harsh weather, difficult terrain, and limited road connectivity.
According to the RFI, the Army plans to procure drones in three operational categories based on altitude requirements. These platforms will be capable of operating from low-altitude regions to extreme mountain environments reaching 20,000 feet, ensuring logistics support across diverse terrains ranging from plains to snow-covered Himalayan positions.
The proposed systems are expected to feature advanced autonomous flight capabilities, secure communication links, GPS-based navigation, obstacle detection, anti-jamming protection, and electro-optical sensors for both daytime and night-time operations. These technologies will allow the drones to conduct reliable missions even in demanding operational conditions where traditional transport options face significant challenges.
Military planners view the project as an important step in enhancing operational readiness while reducing the risks faced by personnel responsible for carrying supplies to isolated posts. In several high-altitude sectors, soldiers and pack animals continue to play a vital role in sustaining frontline deployments. The introduction of unmanned logistics platforms is expected to improve delivery speed, minimise human exposure to hazardous routes, and ensure uninterrupted support during both peacetime and conflict situations.
The procurement also reflects the Army’s broader shift towards integrating unmanned technologies into routine military operations. Recent years have seen increasing investments in surveillance drones, swarm systems, counter-drone capabilities, and autonomous platforms. Logistic drones now represent another critical component of this evolving battlefield ecosystem, where speed, automation, and real-time support are becoming increasingly important.
Another significant aspect of the programme is its potential boost to India’s indigenous drone industry. The RFI encourages participation from original equipment manufacturers and authorised suppliers, aligning with the government’s emphasis on strengthening domestic defence production under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. If executed as planned, the programme could generate new opportunities for Indian drone developers and defence technology firms while expanding the country’s self-reliance in military logistics solutions.
Defence experts believe the planned induction will significantly improve the Army’s ability to sustain long-duration deployments in remote border regions. By combining autonomous technology with modern logistics planning, the Indian Army aims to create a faster, safer, and more resilient supply chain capable of supporting troops operating in some of the world’s most demanding military environments.
