The Indian Army and Assam Rifles paid tribute to Captain Neikezhakuo Kengurüse on the 27th anniversary of his death during the 1999 Kargil conflict, according to reports. The memorial ceremony underscores the armed forces’ continued recognition of gallantry and sacrifice during one of India’s most significant military engagements of the post-independence era.

Captain Kengurüse, an officer of the Assam Rifles, was killed during combat operations in the Kargil sector. The Assam Rifles, India’s oldest paramilitary force raised in 1835, has maintained a distinguished record of operations across the Northeast and along India’s borders. The regiment’s participation in the Kargil War exemplified its critical role in India’s territorial defence.

The Kargil War, fought from May to July 1999, marked a defining moment in Indian military history.
