In India, the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon system will be produced by the Swedish defence manufacturer Saab. Saab, an organisation with a history in the nation spanning more than 40 years, is already producing the Carl-Gustaf M3 here thanks to a relationship with a defence PSU. Army formations in the eastern and western sectors close to LAC have the launchers stationed with them. Gorgen Johannson, senior vice president of Saab, said that the shoulder-fired Carl-Gustaf M4 will start to be produced in 2024. Statement from the company, the new facility will support both its manufacturing and parts for system users all around the world. Furthermore, Saab will work with Indian subcontractors to develop systems that precisely follow the requirements of the “Make in India” programme.
This weapon system is unique because it provides soldiers with a tactical advantage in many types of combat situations, including taking on enemies inside of structures, neutralising armoured vehicles, and removing barriers. The single-weapon system can handle any situation. It allows for greater tactical flexibility while requiring fewer weapons to be carried.
Carl-Gustaf M4
Since the initial collaboration agreement for Indian production of the Carl-Gustaf M4 recoilless rifle was signed in 1976, the Indian Army has been employing this weapon. Due to its wide range of munitions, the Carl-Gustaf has evolved into an important shoulder-launched weapon in the Indian Armed Forces. The majority of the advanced locations of the Indian Army along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China are equipped with older iterations of the weapon system.
The weapon system’s official website describes it as follows: “The man-portable, multi-role Carl-Gustaf recoilless rifle is a weapon system that enables dismounted soldiers to successfully handle a variety of obstacles on the current battlefield. The system is versatile and adaptable and is always changing to meet the demands of users and the market.”
The length and weight of a Carl-Gustaf M4 are both less than one metre and seven kilos, respectively. Additionally, it is an anti-armour, anti-structure, and anti-personnel weapon system due to its fully programmable nature and broad selection of ammunition.
Special features
The system comes with a standard clip-on telescopic sight, but it also gives users the option of an open sight, a red-dot, or an advanced fire control.
Additionally, it includes more advanced air pressure, temperature, visual, and night vision sensors, providing ground forces the upper hand in any circumstance.
Only 84-mm calibre ammunition is usable with the Carl-Gustaf M4. However, they do cover every potential opponent target. Additionally, it has quick smoke rounds for blinding attackers and lighting rounds for nighttime battles.
Furthermore, the system offers greater precision and faster responses while putting cutting-edge technology at your fingertips. Soldiers may finish their operations fast and safely because to the system’s compatibility with contemporary fire control equipment and programmable ammunition.
