India has signed a ₹6,000 crore contract to supply BrahMos cruise missiles to Vietnam, marking a significant expansion of the weapon system’s international footprint and reinforcing New Delhi’s defence partnerships in Southeast Asia.
The BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya. It travels at speeds exceeding Mach 2.8, making it one of the world’s fastest operational cruise missiles, and carries a conventional warhead of up to 300 kilograms.
Vietnam’s acquisition of the BrahMos represents the missile’s third international customer after the Philippines and Indonesia, both of whom have inducted variants into their naval forces. The Vietnamese Navy will deploy the system aboard its Gepard-class frigates, enhancing its anti-ship and land-attack capabilities in the South China Sea, a strategically contested region.
The BrahMos programme, initiated in 1998 as a collaborative venture between India and Russia, has undergone continuous evolution. The naval version, specifically suited for ship-based launch, entered service with the Indian Navy in 2005 and has since become the backbone of India’s maritime strike capability. The missile’s short reaction time and pinpoint accuracy make it effective against both fixed and moving targets.
Vietnam’s selection of the BrahMos reflects India’s strengthened defence diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific region. New Delhi has positioned the system as a credible alternative to Western platforms, particularly for nations seeking advanced anti-ship and land-attack capabilities without the constraints of restrictive export controls or technological dependencies.
The contract also aligns with India’s Make in India initiative, which prioritises defence exports as a revenue driver and validates indigenous defence manufacturing. DRDO and BrahMos Aerospace, the joint venture managing the programme, have expanded production capacity to meet international demand while maintaining supply to the Indian armed forces.
India’s defence exports have grown substantially over the past decade, with missile systems, naval platforms, and light combat aircraft forming the core of overseas offerings. The BrahMos deal with Vietnam underscores the growing trust in Indian defence technology among regional partners and strengthens India’s strategic positioning in a region where maritime security remains paramount.
