India Advances Quantum Security With 14 Indigenous Technologies for Critical Communications

India is accelerating its push towards next-generation communication security with the introduction of 14 indigenous quantum technologies by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). The initiative is aimed at strengthening the protection of sensitive information across defence, telecommunications, government and other critical networks.

The new technology portfolio brings together Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), two approaches considered important for securing communications in the emerging quantum era. While QKD focuses on the secure exchange of encryption keys using quantum principles, PQC is intended to safeguard digital systems against attacks that could be enabled by future quantum computers.

C-DOT has developed the Q-AKSHAY CD and Q-AKSHAY MD systems for quantum-secure communication links. The organisation has also developed supporting components such as the C-SPD single-photon detector and C-RD wideband RF driver, strengthening the indigenous technology base required for quantum communication networks.

The programme has a clear strategic relevance for India’s defence sector. C-DOT’s Q-VIKRAM has been designed as a defence-oriented network encryptor, while Q-PARAKRAM focuses on protecting highly sensitive strategic communications. These technologies could contribute to securing data exchanged across military and government networks.

For high-capacity infrastructure, Q-MAHASETU provides quantum-resistant protection for Layer 2 and Layer 3 networks, while Q-AMOGH focuses on securing high-speed optical communication links. Other solutions in the portfolio extend quantum-safe protection to enterprise networks, wireless connectivity and voice and video communications.

The development comes at a time when governments worldwide are preparing for the possibility that quantum computers could eventually undermine widely used encryption techniques. Data intercepted today could potentially become vulnerable to decryption in the future, making early adoption of quantum-resistant security increasingly important.

C-DOT’s latest products therefore represent an effort to move India’s communication infrastructure towards long-term security while strengthening domestic capabilities in a strategically important technology area. The initiative also complements India’s wider ambitions under the National Quantum Mission to build expertise and infrastructure across the quantum technology ecosystem.
