India is moving ahead with plans to give private companies a larger role in the country’s space launch infrastructure, with the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) opening the Kulasekarapattinam Small Satellite Launch Complex to private-sector participation.
The initiative is aimed at identifying an Indian company capable of operating and managing the launch facility and providing the necessary launch support services to space companies. The move is expected to improve access to launch infrastructure for India’s expanding private space industry.
The Kulasekarapattinam facility is being developed in Tamil Nadu to support small launch vehicles and satellite missions. It will provide dedicated infrastructure for launch activities and is expected to support missions conducted by both government organisations and non-government space companies.
A major advantage of the facility is its coastal location, which provides suitable flight paths for satellite missions targeting polar and sun-synchronous orbits. This makes the launch complex particularly relevant for small satellites used in Earth observation, remote sensing, communications and other commercial applications.
Under the proposed operating model, the selected private company will manage the facility and coordinate launch-related activities for authorised users. The arrangement is intended to make the infrastructure more accessible to commercial launch providers while maintaining the technical and safety requirements associated with space missions.
ISRO is expected to remain involved by providing technical guidance and operational support to the private operator. Such cooperation would help ensure a smooth transition and allow the selected company to build the expertise needed to manage complex launch infrastructure.
The development comes as India’s private space sector continues to attract investment and expand its capabilities. Several domestic companies are working on launch vehicles, satellites and space-based technologies, increasing the need for reliable and accessible launch infrastructure.
The availability of a dedicated facility for small launch vehicles could help Indian companies improve mission planning and increase launch opportunities. It could also strengthen India’s ability to serve the growing international market for small satellite launches.
