IAF Operationalises Nyoma Air Base Near LAC, Strengthening India’s Strategic Reach in Ladakh
India’s highest-altitude fighter-jet-ready airbase becomes operational as Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh makes inaugural landing in Nyoma, Ladakh.

In a significant boost to India’s border defence preparedness, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has officially operationalised the Nyoma Air Base in eastern Ladakh – a major step in enhancing aerial operations near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh inaugurated the strategically vital facility by making the first landing at the newly-constructed runway, marking the beginning of a new era in India’s high-altitude air operations.
Located at an altitude of around 13,700 feet, Nyoma is now one of the world’s highest military airbases capable of handling modern fighter jets, transport aircraft, and heavy-lift helicopters. The base lies approximately 30 kilometres from the LAC, offering India a rapid response capability in one of the most sensitive and contested regions.
The project was executed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under extremely challenging weather and terrain conditions. Despite freezing temperatures and thin air, the BRO completed the airfield infrastructure ahead of schedule. The airstrip is designed to accommodate aircraft such as the C-17 Globemaster III, C-130J Super Hercules, and Sukhoi-30 MKI, significantly improving India’s logistics, surveillance, and combat readiness in the region.
Nyoma Air Base complements the existing airfields at Leh, Thoise, and Fukche, creating a robust network of operational bases across Ladakh. This development not only strengthens India’s tactical reach but also improves supply lines to forward posts along the LAC, especially during emergencies or heightened tensions.
The airbase, which had earlier functioned as an Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) for light aircraft and helicopters, has now been transformed into a full-scale airfield with permanent infrastructure. Officials have hailed it as a symbol of India’s growing self-reliance and resilience in high-altitude warfare.
Defence experts believe the operationalisation of Nyoma underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its northern borders and maintaining readiness for rapid mobilization. It also sends a clear message about India’s determination to strengthen its deterrence capabilities amid evolving regional security dynamics.
With this achievement, the Indian Air Force now possesses a formidable forward operating base in the Himalayas – enhancing strategic depth, boosting surveillance, and ensuring that India’s skies over Ladakh remain secure.
