Fake BARC Scientist Arrested in Delhi; Sensitive Nuclear Data and Fake IDs Seized

Delhi Police uncover forged documents, multiple passports, and alleged nuclear-related material in high-profile security breach

In a startling revelation, Delhi Police have arrested a man who posed as a scientist from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and was allegedly in possession of forged identity cards, multiple passports, and sensitive nuclear-related data. The accused, identified as Akhtar Hussain Qutubuddin Ahmed, was taken into custody following a joint operation between the Delhi Police Special Cell and Mumbai Crime Branch.

According to officials, the accused had been impersonating a senior BARC scientist for several years, using fake credentials and government-issued identity documents to gain credibility. During the raid, authorities reportedly recovered maps, technical drawings, and digital storage devices containing information linked to nuclear facilities. Investigators are currently verifying whether the data is genuine or fabricated.

Police also seized multiple passports and identity proofs under different aliases, including documents from both Indian and foreign agencies. Preliminary findings suggest that the accused had used these forged documents to travel abroad and maintain contact with individuals in other countries.

A senior Delhi Police officer stated that the suspect “operated under an elaborate deception, forging documents with precision to appear as a legitimate government scientist.” The accused allegedly created fake BARC ID cards, complete with holograms and barcodes, to avoid suspicion.

Investigators are now probing possible links to foreign intelligence networks, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) also expected to join the case. Officials said that digital forensic analysis is underway to determine the source and authenticity of the recovered materials.

Authorities have termed the case a matter of national security, warning that impersonation of officials from critical institutions like BARC could pose a serious risk to India’s strategic and research infrastructure. Further interrogations are expected to reveal how the accused managed to operate undetected for so long.

Police sources confirmed that the suspect is currently being held under multiple sections related to forgery, identity fraud, and potential violations of the Official Secrets Act.

As the investigation deepens, central agencies are expected to coordinate with the Department of Atomic Energy to assess whether any sensitive information was leaked or misused.
