According to News9, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar is expected to be named the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

Rajnath Singh, the Union Defence Minister, stated on Tuesday that the new Chief of Defence Staff will be appointed shortly, adding that the process is well underway.

Since General Bipin Rawat’s death in a helicopter crash on December 8, last year, the position of Chief of Defence Staff has been vacant.

The government issued notices earlier this month, expanding the field of candidates for the top job.

Any incumbent or retired lieutenant general, air marshal, or vice-admiral under the age of 62 will be eligible for appointment to the position of Chief of Defence Staff under the new guidelines.

According to revisions to the Army, Air Force, and Navy Acts, three-star officers, as well as serving chiefs of the three services, are now eligible to become the Chief of Defence Staff.

On January 1, 2020, General Rawat became India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, with the mission of bringing the Army, Navy, and Air Force together and bolstering the country’s overall military capabilities.

Another significant mission of the Chief of Defence Staff was to promote the restructure of military commands for optimal resource utilisation by promoting jointness in operations, including the creation of theatre commands.
