Pakistan’s Chinese Z-10ME Helicopter Acquisition Could Strengthen Its Army Aviation Capabilities

Pakistan is reportedly preparing to expand its attack helicopter capabilities through a potential acquisition of 30 Z-10ME helicopters from China. The reported agreement could represent an important development in Pakistan’s military modernisation programme, particularly as the country seeks to strengthen its Army Aviation capabilities and replace ageing combat helicopters.

According to reports published by the South China Morning Post, the information emerged after a Chinese military blogger, known as Sashoujian, shared an image on social media allegedly showing an export agreement between China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) and Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence Production. The reported contract was signed on July 11 and covers 30 Z-10ME attack helicopters, along with associated equipment and support services.

However, the year of the alleged agreement has not been specified. Neither Beijing nor Islamabad has officially confirmed the contract, its financial value or the expected delivery schedule. Therefore, the reported figure of 30 helicopters should be treated as an unconfirmed procurement claim rather than a formally announced purchase.

The reported acquisition comes as Pakistan continues efforts to modernise its military helicopter fleet. For several years, Islamabad has explored different international suppliers to replace its ageing American-made AH-1F Cobra attack helicopters. Previous procurement efforts involving the American AH-1Z Viper and Turkish T129 ATAK helicopters faced significant obstacles, including export approval restrictions.

The Chinese-built Z-10ME has consequently emerged as an important platform in Pakistan’s military aviation modernisation efforts. It is an export-oriented, upgraded version of China’s Z-10 attack helicopter, developed for missions involving armoured vehicles, ground targets and battlefield support.

The Z-10ME incorporates several improvements intended to enhance its operational capabilities. These include upgraded propulsion systems, improved electronic warfare equipment, protective measures and advanced target-detection technology. One of its notable features is a millimetre-wave radar mounted above the main rotor, allowing the helicopter to search for targets while remaining partially concealed behind terrain.

The aircraft also features an advanced targeting system combining infrared imaging, television cameras and laser-based equipment. These technologies are designed to support target identification and engagement during both daytime and nighttime operations.

In terms of armament, the Z-10ME is designed to carry anti-tank guided missiles, air-to-air missiles, rocket pods and a 23mm cannon. Its weapons configuration provides flexibility for different battlefield missions, including close air support and anti-armour operations.

Its high-altitude operating potential is particularly relevant to Pakistan’s northern mountainous regions. The helicopter’s upgraded engines and environmental protection systems are intended to improve performance in demanding operating conditions. However, the reported acquisition does not establish that all 30 aircraft will specifically be deployed along the Himalayan frontier.

The development also reflects China’s expanding role as a major defence supplier to Pakistan. Chinese-origin fighter aircraft, unmanned aerial systems, air-defence equipment and precision-guided weapons already form important parts of Islamabad’s military inventory.

If the reported agreement is confirmed, the acquisition of 30 Z-10ME helicopters would further strengthen defence cooperation between the two countries. It could also provide Pakistan with additional attack aviation capabilities, although the actual operational impact would depend on deliveries, crew training, maintenance arrangements and weapons integration.

For now, the reported contract remains unconfirmed, and further official information from Beijing or Islamabad will be necessary to establish the actual procurement details.
