Seven Indian seafarers who had been stranded aboard the MV Sea Star 2 at Mina Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi have been repatriated, bringing relief to the crew members and their families after a prolonged wait.
The development was confirmed by the Indian Embassy in the UAE, which has been involved in efforts to assist the affected seafarers. While seven crew members have now returned, work remains underway to help the other Indian seafarers associated with the vessel reach home safely.
The situation surrounding the tanker had attracted attention because of the extended period for which members of its crew remained in Abu Dhabi. Maritime representatives had raised concerns about the difficulties faced by the seafarers and called for intervention to address their outstanding issues and arrange their repatriation.
The Federation of Seafarers’ Unions of India had previously highlighted concerns involving the crew, including claims of delayed wages and the prolonged wait for relief and repatriation. The union urged the concerned Indian authorities and international maritime organisations to take steps to protect the interests of the affected sailors.
The latest repatriation represents an important step toward resolving the matter. However, the return of seven crew members does not mark the end of the issue, as the remaining seafarers still require assistance before they can leave the vessel and return to India.
Indian diplomatic officials are continuing to coordinate with the relevant authorities in the UAE regarding the remaining crew. The focus is now on resolving the pending matters and ensuring that the seafarers are able to return home without further unnecessary delays.
The case also underlines the importance of effective welfare and repatriation mechanisms for Indian seafarers working on international vessels. Long periods at sea can become particularly challenging when employment, wage or vessel-related disputes prevent crew members from completing their contracts and travelling home.
With seven Indian sailors now repatriated, attention is expected to remain on the remaining crew members of the MV Sea Star 2 and the efforts being made to secure their safe return.
