India and Israel are moving towards a stronger economic partnership as negotiations for a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) gain momentum. Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar has highlighted the potential of the agreement to expand trade and investment while creating new opportunities for cooperation in innovation, technology and other strategic sectors.
The proposed FTA is expected to provide a broader framework for businesses from both countries to increase their commercial engagement. Beyond reducing barriers to trade, the agreement could help create a more favourable environment for investment and encourage companies to explore new partnerships in high-value sectors.
Innovation is expected to remain an important part of the expanding India-Israel economic relationship. Both countries already cooperate in areas involving advanced technology and research, while Israeli companies have increasingly looked towards India for opportunities to develop and adapt technological solutions. A stronger trade framework could further support collaboration between companies and encourage greater movement of technology and investment.
The partnership also has significant potential in the defence sector. India and Israel have developed close defence and security cooperation over the years, with both countries working together on advanced military technologies and solutions. Greater cooperation in innovation and manufacturing could provide additional opportunities for joint development and production as the two sides seek to respond to evolving security challenges.
Infrastructure is another area where the economic relationship could expand. Israeli projects could offer opportunities for Indian infrastructure companies, while India’s industrial capabilities could contribute to the development of major projects in Israel. This could create a new dimension in bilateral economic cooperation beyond traditional merchandise trade.
Agriculture and water technology also remain important areas of India-Israel cooperation. Israeli expertise in agricultural technology, water management and related solutions has already found applications in India. Increased investment and commercial cooperation could help bring more Israeli technologies to the Indian market while enabling Indian companies to adapt and manufacture solutions suited to local requirements.
The proposed FTA therefore represents an opportunity to take India-Israel relations beyond conventional trade and towards a broader economic partnership based on investment, innovation and technology. As negotiations continue, both countries are looking to build an agreement that can generate long-term benefits for businesses and strengthen the wider strategic relationship between India and Israel.
