In a significant tribute to military valour, the Northern Railway has officially renamed Kathua Railway Station in Jammu and Kashmir as “Martyr Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary Kathua Railway Station.” The decision commemorates the courage and supreme sacrifice of Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary, a Kirti Chakra awardee who laid down his life while leading a counter-insurgency operation against ULFA militants in Assam in 2008.
The renaming has come into effect immediately following an official notification issued by the Jammu Division of Northern Railway. While the station’s operational code and railway records remain unchanged, its new name will now appear across official railway documents, station signage, and passenger information systems.
Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary, a native of Kathua district, was widely respected for his leadership and bravery in the Indian Army’s 7/11 Gorkha Rifles. During an anti-insurgency mission in Assam, he continued to lead his team despite sustaining critical injuries and eliminated militants before succumbing to his wounds. For his extraordinary courage, he was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
The move has been welcomed across Jammu and Kashmir, with many viewing it as a fitting recognition of a soldier whose sacrifice continues to inspire future generations. The renaming also strengthens the growing tradition of honouring India’s military heroes by naming important public infrastructure after decorated armed forces personnel.
Captain Choudhary’s family and residents of Kathua have long advocated for permanent recognition of his service. The railway station, serving as a key gateway to the region, now stands as a lasting memorial to his courage and dedication to the nation.
The decision reflects the government’s broader efforts to preserve the legacy of gallantry award recipients and ensure that their stories remain part of India’s public memory. Every passenger passing through Kathua will now encounter the name of a soldier whose actions exemplified the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
