Indian Army Unveils First Modernised VT-72B Armoured Recovery Vehicle
Indigenous overhaul strengthens the Army’s armoured support capabilities

In a significant boost to its armoured fleet, the Indian Army has unveiled the first fully modernised VT-72B Armoured Recovery Vehicle (ARV). The upgraded vehicle marks a major step in ensuring operational readiness and robust support for frontline units.
The comprehensive overhaul was carried out with the active involvement of Indian defence manufacturers, reflecting the Army’s commitment to self-reliance and local expertise. The upgrade enhances the VT-72B’s reliability, extends its service life, and improves its capacity to recover and repair tanks and other heavy armoured vehicles on the battlefield.
Designed to provide critical recovery support during combat operations, the VT-72B ARV plays a pivotal role in maintaining the effectiveness of India’s mechanised forces. With this modernisation, the Army is better equipped to quickly restore damaged vehicles and maintain continuous operational momentum.
Officials stated that the project aligns with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, highlighting the strategic importance of indigenous solutions in defence. The initiative not only strengthens India’s military logistics but also reduces reliance on foreign maintenance support.
The induction of the first upgraded VT-72B ARV is expected to pave the way for further overhauls of similar vehicles, ensuring that India’s armoured recovery fleet remains modern, efficient, and fully mission-ready.
