Indian Navy’s Training Squadron Reaches Mozambique to Mark 50 Years of Friendship

Warships of the First Training Squadron begin a four-day port call in Maputo, strengthening naval cooperation and celebrating five decades of diplomatic ties.

The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS) has arrived at Maputo, Mozambique, in a significant outreach marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Mozambique. The deployment highlights India’s growing emphasis on defence diplomacy and maritime partnerships across the Indian Ocean region.

The squadron, led by Captain Tijo K Joseph, comprises INS Tir, INS Sujata, INS Shardul, and the Indian Coast Guard Ship Sarathi. The vessels were welcomed by the Mozambique Navy with a ceremonial reception, symbolizing the strong and enduring ties between the two nations.

During its four-day visit, the Indian contingent will take part in a series of professional exchanges, training activities, and cultural programs. Planned exercises include:

  • Boarding and Search Operations (VBSS)
  • Seamanship and communication drills
  • Joint diving operations
  • Firefighting and damage control training

The visit will conclude with a PASSEX (Passing Exercise) at sea, including joint surveillance of Mozambique’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), boosting maritime security cooperation.

Beyond military engagements, the visit also includes a diplomatic and community-oriented agenda. Officers and cadets are scheduled to meet senior Mozambican officials, interact with local schools, organize yoga sessions, conduct medical camps, and participate in sports events, fostering people-to-people connections.

This milestone visit reflects India’s broader vision under MAHASAGAR (Maritime Neighbourhood Cooperation), aimed at enhancing security, trust, and friendship with partners across the Indian Ocean.
