India and Thailand Conclude 14th Edition of Exercise Maitree in Meghalaya

Bilateral training boosts counter-terrorism readiness and strengthens defence partnership

The Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army have successfully concluded the 14th edition of their joint military exercise Maitree at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya. The two-week engagement brought together troops from India’s Madras Regiment and Thailand’s 1st Infantry Battalion to practice high-intensity tactical drills, counter-terrorism operations, and peacekeeping maneuvers.

The exercise focused on joint planning, execution of raids, establishing intelligence and surveillance networks, heliborne operations, and hostage rescue missions. A final 48-hour validation phase tested the operational synergy between the two armies in simulated conflict environments.

Alongside battlefield training, both contingents participated in cultural exchanges, sports competitions, and heritage showcases, which helped foster camaraderie and mutual respect. The closing ceremony included felicitation of outstanding participants and traditional performances reflecting the shared martial spirit of both nations.

Since its inception in 2006, Exercise Maitree has served as a cornerstone of India-Thailand defence cooperation. This year’s edition highlighted the growing emphasis on interoperability, use of modern equipment, and preparedness for counter-terrorism challenges in diverse terrain.

Defence officials noted that such bilateral drills not only improve tactical capabilities but also contribute to regional stability and stronger strategic ties between New Delhi and Bangkok. Future editions are expected to expand in scale and scope, reinforcing cooperation across land, air, and possibly naval domains.
