Winter is coming: As The Conflict In Ukraine Intensifies, Russia Ups The Nuclear Ante

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February of this year, the threat of a nuclear conflict has been looming over the entire planet. Eight months into the conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin has once more resorted to using his nation’s nuclear arsenal in response to Ukrainian soldiers’ persistent resistance. It will be a hard winter for the people living in the war-torn country as military attacks in Ukraine escalate and the threat of nuclear war remains ever-present.

A string of drone attacks by Russian military have left Ukraine in ruins. Last week, Moscow sent dozens of “kamikaze” drones into Ukraine, damaging its energy infrastructure and killing numerous civilians.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, has said that Russia intends to blow up a hydroelectric dam, flooding a significant portion of southern Ukraine. According to Zelenskyy, Russian military have hidden explosives within the massive Nova Kakhovka dam, which is responsible for holding back a sizable reservoir.

In addition to intensifying its campaign in Ukraine, Russia has told the US that it intends to conduct yearly drills of its nuclear arsenal and soldiers. The US anticipates that during its yearly “Grom” exercises of the strategic nuclear forces, Russia will test nuclear weapons. As Putin suggested the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons to prevent the US and its allies from losing the war, experts have interpreted the move as posing a threat to them.

Russia has charged Ukraine with preparing a radioactive bomb to be deployed in the Russian-occupied town of Kherson. Kyiv has denied the assertion, with the country’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, calling it ludicrous and dangerous. “Russians frequently accuse others of what they intend themselves,” he continued.

A “dirty bomb” is intended to spread radioactive contamination over a large region, endangering nearby humans. There is no nuclear explosion in it.

While threatening an attack by Ukraine using a “dirty bomb,” the Kremlin has also said that if Kyiv uses a “dirty bomb,” it might be forced to deploy a tactical nuclear weapon.

US RESPONSE TO RUSSIAN NUCLEAR THREAT

US President Joe Biden stated any nuclear assault would be a “severe error” in response to the Russian tactical nuclear threat. He warned that if Russia used a tactical nuclear bomb, it would be making a grave error.

The US fears that Russia may use a dirty bomb of its own in a “false flag” operation to cover up the use of conventional nuclear weapons by Moscow.

Joe Biden responded, “I’m not guaranteeing you that it’s a false-flag operation yet; I don’t know,” when asked whether Russia was getting ready to use a “dirty bomb” or a nuclear weapon. But doing so would be a grave error.

INDIA URGES RUSSIA, UKRAINE TO AVOID NUCLEAR WAR

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh warned his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu that neither side should use the nuclear option as a last resort in the face of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Instead, the situation should be resolved through negotiations and diplomacy, according to Shoigu.

Shoigu was informed by Rajnath Singh that nuclear war should be avoided at all costs since it goes against the fundamental principles of mankind.
