Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a stronger and coordinated international response to terrorism as leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) adopted the Bishkek Declaration at the 26th SCO Summit in Kyrgyzstan.
The summit brought together leaders of SCO member states to discuss regional security, economic cooperation and emerging global challenges. For India, the meeting provided an opportunity to underline the importance of collective action against terrorism and other transnational security threats.
Speaking at the summit, Modi stressed that the fight against terrorism must extend beyond individual attacks and target the networks that sustain terrorist organisations. He highlighted terror financing, recruitment, radicalisation and safe havens as areas requiring greater international cooperation. India also reiterated its position that terrorism cannot be justified or selectively addressed for geopolitical purposes.
Modi identified security, connectivity and opportunity as key areas for deeper SCO cooperation. He emphasised that a stable security environment is essential for economic development and stronger regional partnerships.
Afghanistan was another important element of India’s regional outlook. Modi underlined the significance of peace and stability in Afghanistan for the wider Eurasian region and reaffirmed India’s support for humanitarian assistance and development-oriented initiatives benefiting the Afghan population.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the impact of conflicts on global energy supplies, maritime routes and supply chains. He said disruptions in one part of the world can have consequences far beyond the immediate conflict zone, particularly for developing economies. India continued to advocate dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means of resolving international disputes.
New Delhi also called for stronger cooperation against drug trafficking, organised crime and other forms of transnational criminal activity. Modi emphasised the need to make existing SCO mechanisms more effective through practical coordination and information sharing.
Economic and people-centric cooperation also featured in India’s vision for the organisation. Modi highlighted initiatives aimed at supporting young innovators, entrepreneurs and researchers while encouraging stronger trade and connectivity across the SCO region.
The adoption of the Bishkek Declaration reflects the organisation’s continued focus on addressing common security and development challenges. India’s participation at the summit reinforced its call for a secure, connected and prosperous Eurasian region, with terrorism remaining a key area for collective action.
