Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reflected on the devastating September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, remembering the thousands of people who died and highlighting the impact of the tragedy on Indian families.
Speaking during the latest episode of his monthly Mann Ki Baat programme, Modi recalled that Indians represented the largest group of victims after Americans in the attacks. His remarks came as the United States and the international community observe the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.
The September 11 attacks involved the hijacking of four commercial passenger aircraft. Two planes were deliberately crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York, while another aircraft struck the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members attempted to intervene.
The attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people and had far-reaching consequences for international security and counter-terrorism policies. The tragedy also claimed the lives of people from several countries, including India.
Modi recalled his visit to New York in 2014, when he paid tribute to those who died at the 9/11 Memorial. He said the visit remained significant as he remembered the innocent people who lost their lives in the attacks.
The Prime Minister also referred to India’s own experience with terrorism while discussing the significance of the anniversary. He mentioned the serial blasts in Delhi in September 2008 and the Mumbai attacks in November that year, highlighting the continuing challenge posed by terrorism.
He further recalled India’s response to terrorism over the years, including the September 2016 surgical strikes. According to Modi, the operation represented an important point in India’s stated approach towards dealing with cross-border terrorism.
Twenty-five years after 9/11, the attacks continue to be remembered as a major turning point in global security. Modi’s remarks also drew attention to the Indian connection to the tragedy, underscoring how the loss extended far beyond the borders of the United States.
