Pakistan Rejects NIA Chargesheet Against Hafiz Saeed in Pahalgam Attack Case
Pakistan has publicly rejected the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) chargesheet against Hafiz Saeed in connection with the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, defending the UN-designated terrorist and dismissing the Indian investigation as baseless.
The NIA filed the chargesheet after investigating the militant assault that killed several civilians. Islamabad’s defence of Saeed, the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), underscores the persistent tensions in India-Pakistan security relations and India’s longstanding concerns over Pakistan’s handling of terror groups operating from its territory.
Hafiz Saeed has been designated as a terrorist by the United Nations and has been linked to several major terror attacks, including the Mumbai attacks that claimed 166 lives. Pakistan previously placed him under house arrest amid international pressure and has prosecuted him in terrorism financing cases, while India has continued to seek stronger action and his extradition in connection with terrorism-related investigations.
The Pahalgam attack represents one of several attacks attributed to LeT and its affiliates across Jammu and Kashmir. The Anantnag region, part of South Kashmir, has remained an area of significant militant activity and counter-insurgency operations by Indian security forces. The NIA’s investigation and subsequent chargesheet highlight India’s multi-agency approach to building legal cases against those accused of planning and supporting cross-border terrorism.
India’s internal security establishment has consistently maintained that terrorist networks receive support from elements within Pakistan’s military and intelligence establishment. The NIA, India’s premier counter-terrorism investigation agency operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has jurisdiction over terrorism-related offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Pakistan’s rejection of the chargesheet is consistent with its longstanding position of denying involvement in attacks that India attributes to Pakistan-based terrorist organisations. India has repeatedly urged Pakistan to take stronger action against groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and to cooperate in terrorism-related investigations.
The filing of the chargesheet reflects the NIA’s continued efforts to investigate cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian security agencies continue to pursue legal action against individuals accused of directing or facilitating terrorist activities, while documenting evidence for judicial proceedings and international engagement.
