Indian Navy’s Indigenously Built INS Sumedha Celebrates 9th Anniversary

Tuesday, March 7, was the ninth anniversary of the Indian Naval Ship Sumedha. It is an offshore patrol ship that was designed and built in India. The ship was made by Goa Shipyard Limited and joined the Indian Navy on March 8, 2014. It is part of the eastern fleet of the Indian Navy.

The ship’s main job is to patrol along the coast and out at sea. It also keeps an eye on the ocean and makes sure that ships can talk to each other. It is an important part of the Indian Naval fleet, and on August 15, 2022, it was sent to Perth to host the Indian Tricolor as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.

About INS Sumedha

It is the third Indian Navy patrol ship of the Saryu class. It has advanced weapons and sensors, can carry a helicopter, and can stay in the air for a long time. It is part of the eastern fleet of the Indian Navy, which is based in Visakhapatnam. The Flag-officer commanding-in-chief of the Eastern Naval command is in charge of how it works.

It is the third ship built as part of the project to build an indigenous naval off-shore patrol vessel. Its main job is to patrol the coast, protect offshore assets, and keep an eye on things. It also handles operations for assets with a lot of value. It can also carry Indian Navy helicopters. It goes 46 km/h (29 mph) per knot.

Participation in NAVDEX23 and IDEX23

The INS Sumedha got to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on February 20, 2023. It took part in the Naval Defense Exhibition (NAVDEX) and IDEX 23. ( International Defence Exhibition). It was held from 20th-24th February 2023.

The ship’s presence at the top defence shows will show how strong India’s shipbuilding industry is. It will also show how the Prime Minister sees Aatmanirbhar Bharat coming together. It was made by people in the country, and it will encourage the navy to buy more equipment made in the country to strengthen its fleet of warships and patrol ships.

During the show, more than USD 4-5 billion worth of business is done. About USD 90,000 worth of business was done at the recent Aero India 2023 defence show. India is trying to increase its defence exports. India wants to reach a goal of Rs 35,000 crores in defence exports by 2025. In the budget for 2023–2024, the defence sector got the most money.
