Indian Army Launches Official X Account to Combat Misinformation

The Indian Army has launched an official X (formerly Twitter) account with the tagline “Verify Before You Amplify” to counter fake news and misinformation about military operations, personnel, and defence matters, the Army confirmed.

The move reflects growing institutional concern over the spread of unverified claims on social media that can undermine public confidence, compromise operational security, or spread panic during genuine crises. By establishing a direct communication channel, the Army aims to provide authentic information and fact-check false narratives in real time.

This initiative aligns with broader Indian military strategy to maintain information dominance and protect the narrative space from adversarial exploitation. In recent years, Pakistan-based actors and hostile state entities have weaponised social media to spread disinformation about Indian military capabilities, casualty figures, equipment status, and operational readiness, particularly during border tensions and military exercises.

The Army’s digital outreach joins similar efforts by other Indian defence organisations. The Indian Air Force and Navy already maintain active social media presence to share operational updates, recruitment notices, and counter false claims. DRDO, India’s principal defence research agency, regularly uses official channels to highlight indigenous weapons development and address misconceptions about the timeline and capabilities of homegrown systems.

The emergence of deepfakes, AI-generated synthetic media, and coordinated disinformation campaigns has accelerated the need for institutional presence on social platforms. The “Verify Before You Amplify” messaging carries particular resonance, as it urges citizens and journalists to exercise critical scrutiny before retransmitting unvalidated claims that can cascade across networks and shape public perception in strategic moments.

India’s defence establishment has historically faced challenges in rapid response to false narratives due to operational security constraints and the lag between military action and public disclosure. A dedicated X account allows faster, context-rich communication without compromising classified information or ongoing operations. The platform’s real-time nature and broad reach make it an effective tool for institutional messaging during both routine periods and crisis situations.

The initiative also reflects awareness of information warfare as a domain of competition alongside kinetic and cyber domains. Adversaries and hostile non-state actors routinely attempt to sow discord, undermine recruitment, or damage force morale through coordinated false narratives. By establishing trusted channels for authentic military communication, the Army reduces the space for such campaigns to gain traction.
