China had a resolution against the AUKUS, but India used its diplomatic skills at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to get China to back down.
Sources say that from September 26-30, 2022, the “General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)” took place in Vienna. China tried to get a resolution against the AUKUS because it wanted to give Australia submarines that ran on nuclear power (but armed with conventional weapons).
China said that this plan went against what it had to do under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). It also said bad things about the IAEA’s part in this.
India looked at the initiative with an open mind and agreed that the IAEA’s technical evaluation was sound. Many IAEA member states worked closely with the Indian Mission in Vienna on this issue.
Many smaller countries were able to take a clear position on the Chinese proposal because of India’s role. China withdrew its draught resolution on September 30 when it became clear that it would not get support from the majority.
On September 28, the Chinese were so sure that the plan would work that they asked Global Times to write an article about it.
IAEA member states, especially the AUKUS partners, were very grateful for India’s skillful and effective diplomacy.
