India has expanded its engagement in the development of next-generation communication technologies by joining a US-led international initiative dedicated to the future of 6G networks. The move places India alongside 25 other governments seeking greater cooperation on how emerging telecommunications systems should be developed, secured and deployed.
The international effort is centred on building a more secure and resilient foundation for 6G. Participating countries are looking at areas such as trusted technologies, network interoperability, supply-chain resilience and common approaches to security as research into the next generation of wireless communication accelerates.
India’s participation comes at a time when the country is increasing its focus on becoming a technology developer rather than remaining primarily a consumer of advanced telecommunications systems. The government has been encouraging domestic research, innovation and industry participation in preparation for the eventual transition from 5G to 6G.
The development also connects with the work of the Bharat 6G Alliance, which was established to bring together Indian technology companies, telecom stakeholders, research organisations and academic institutions. Its broader objective is to strengthen India’s contribution to international 6G research and help Indian-developed technologies find a place in future global communication standards.
The latest international engagement could give Indian technology stakeholders greater exposure to discussions surrounding the technical and security requirements of future networks. International coordination will become increasingly important as countries and technology companies work on standards that could determine how 6G infrastructure operates across different markets.
Unlike previous generations of mobile technology, 6G is expected to involve a much broader technological ecosystem.
