Houthis Claim Saudi F-15 Fighter Jet Downed Over Marib Amid Rising Yemen Tensions

Yemen’s Houthi movement has claimed that its air-defence forces brought down a Saudi F-15 fighter aircraft over Marib, in a development that could mark a significant escalation in the renewed fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces.

According to Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, the aircraft was engaged over Marib when it was targeted by a locally manufactured surface-to-air missile. The group also claimed that Saudi fighter formations were operating in the area at the time of the incident.

The reported loss of the F-15 has not been confirmed by Saudi authorities or independently verified. As a result, the aircraft’s reported destruction should currently be treated as a Houthi claim rather than an independently established battlefield loss.

The claim emerged amid an intensifying series of military exchanges between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. Houthi officials have accused Saudi aircraft of conducting extensive air operations against targets across Yemen, while the group has continued to announce attacks against Saudi military and strategic targets.

The F-15 claim came shortly after a separate incident near Mecca. Saudi Arabia said its air-defence forces intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of the holy city on September 15 before it could enter restricted airspace. Saudi coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Malki said the drone was intercepted at around 6:50 p.m. local time.

The Houthis have rejected Saudi allegations that they targeted Mecca or other Islamic holy sites. Houthi officials have described the accusation as misinformation and said their operations are directed at military and economic targets rather than religious sites.

The two developments underline the rapidly deteriorating security environment surrounding Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The renewed fighting has also raised concerns over the wider Red Sea region, particularly because Houthi forces have expanded their presence along parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coast near the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

If the reported F-15 loss is subsequently verified, it would represent a notable development for the Saudi-led air campaign in Yemen. For now, however, the lack of independent confirmation means the circumstances surrounding the alleged shootdown remain unclear.

Further statements from Saudi authorities, additional evidence from the reported crash site, or verified imagery could help establish whether the Saudi fighter was actually lost and what caused the reported incident.
