Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) is moving ahead with a major expansion of its shipbuilding infrastructure after approving a ₹2,896 crore capital outlay for a new greenfield shipyard at Raichak in West Bengal.
The investment was approved by GRSE’s Board at its 423rd meeting on September 21, 2026. The proposed facility is intended to increase the company’s shipbuilding capacity and provide additional infrastructure for both naval and commercial vessel construction.
The Raichak project forms part of GRSE’s broader effort to strengthen its production infrastructure in West Bengal. The company has been planning additional facilities to complement its existing shipbuilding operations and create greater capacity for upcoming projects.
The planned Raichak complex is expected to include major shipbuilding infrastructure such as a dry dock, slipway, launching facilities, jetties and areas for block fabrication. Earlier plans indicated that the facility could support the construction of warships measuring up to 200 metres and commercial vessels with a capacity of up to 60,000 deadweight tonnes.
The new yard is significant for GRSE as the company continues to handle requirements across the naval and commercial shipbuilding sectors. Its existing capabilities include construction and repair of warships, auxiliary vessels and other specialised platforms.
The investment also comes at a time when India’s shipbuilding sector is witnessing greater emphasis on domestic capacity and indigenous manufacturing. Additional infrastructure can give established shipbuilders more room to undertake multiple projects and accommodate larger construction requirements.
Alongside the Raichak project, GRSE has also been working on infrastructure development at other locations in West Bengal. These initiatives are aimed at improving the company’s shipbuilding, repair and small-vessel construction capabilities.
With the ₹2,896 crore approval, GRSE has now taken a significant step towards establishing the Raichak facility. Once developed, the new shipyard is expected to add to the company’s existing production base and support its future requirements in naval as well as commercial shipbuilding.
