Axel, The Army’s Assault Dog: A Brief Profile Of A True Hero Killed In Action

Axel, an elite assault dog in the Indian Army, was killed in action last week after being hit by bullets fired by a terrorist during a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday.

On June 26, 2020, Axel was born. In December 2021, he joined the Indian Army’s 26 Army Dog Unit and was trained to charge and neutralise the enemy if he saw a weapon. He was also taught how to use a camera mounted on his back.

A tribute video to Axel has gone viral on social media. Major (Retd) Surendra Poonia shared the video. The video has already received over 5000 likes and has been viewed 55,000 times.

Before going into action, trained dogs in the armed forces go through rigorous commando-style training.

Axel, a two-year-old German Shepherd assigned to the 26 Army Dog Unit, was killed when he was hit by a terrorist’s bullet while participating in a counter-terrorist operation with the 29 Rashtriya Rifles unit.

Before being shot, Axel pinpointed the location of a holed-up terrorist, thereby protecting a nearby mosque.
